Course Description:

This course is designed to provide a fitness-focused approach to the practice of yoga. Students will learn about the benefits of combining yoga with cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility training. The course will also cover the principles of proper alignment and breath control in yoga postures, as well as the use of props to modify and intensify the practice.

Course Outline:

Unit 1: Introduction to Yoga Fitness

  • History and philosophy of yoga
  • Benefits of combining yoga with fitness training
  • Warm-up and cool-down exercises for yoga fitness

Unit 2: Yoga Postures for Cardiovascular Fitness

  • Sun Salutations and other vinyasa sequences
  • Standing and balancing poses for strength and endurance
  • Backbends and inversions for circulation and energy


Unit 3: Yoga Postures for Strength Training

  • Arm balances and core strengthening poses
  • Use of weights and resistance bands in yoga fitness
  • Modifications and variations for different fitness levels


Unit 4: Yoga Postures for Flexibility Training

  • Forward folds and hip openers for flexibility and mobility
  • Use of straps and blocks to deepen stretches
  • Mind-body connection in stretching and relaxation

Assessment:

Assessment will be based on attendance and participation, demonstration of proper alignment and technique, and completion of assigned readings and written reflections. Students will also be required to develop a personal yoga fitness plan and submit a final project demonstrating their knowledge and skills in yoga fitness.
